Nearly two weeks into the NBA season, who has the best shot to win it all? I’ll answer that question at the start of every month this season with my NBA Power Rankings here on Yahoo Sports.
I’ve ranked all 30 teams in the order I’d pick them to win the title while also accounting for recent performance. That means the undefeated Grizzlies don’t rank first, but it does mean they’ve taken a big jump from where they were in the preseason. Let’s get to it starting with the league’s worst teams:
East: Atlanta Hawks • Boston Celtics • Brooklyn Nets • Charlotte Hornets • Chicago Bulls • Cleveland Cavaliers • Detroit Pistons • Indiana Pacers • Miami Heat • Milwaukee Bucks • New York Knicks • Orlando Magic • Philadelphia 76ers • Toronto Raptors • Washington Wizards
Advertisement
West: Dallas Mavericks • Denver Nuggets • Golden State Warriors • Houston Rockets • LA Clippers • Los Angeles Lakers • Memphis Grizzlies • Minnesota Timberwolves • New Orleans Pelicans • Oklahoma City Thunder • Phoenix Suns • Portland Trail Blazers • Sacramento Kings • San Antonio Spurs • Utah Jazz
RELEGATION ZONE CANDIDATES
30. Sacramento Kings
Record: 0-6 | Previous rank: 30
The Kings are winless. They didn’t even win a preseason game. They’ve gotten pounded every single night and have very little hope of winning more than one or two of their next 13 games, which means breaking the NBA’s worst losing streak to begin a season (0-18) is certainly on the table for Sacramento.
For Kings fans to stay sane this year, they can’t be worried about the score at the final buzzer. It has to be about the development of rookie point guard Darius Acuff. Straight out of the gates, Acuff is averaging 26.3 points per game, but he’s doing it on 24 shots per game. Over the course of the year, Kings fans should obviously root for more epic scoring performances from their rookie guard, but they also need to see him improve his scoring efficiency, develop as a playmaker, and show some heart as a defender. Acuff needs to prove he can be somebody who can impact winning. Or else he’s going to earn a reputation: Empty stats scorer.
29. Milwaukee Bucks
Record: 1-5 | Previous rank: 29
New Bucks head coach Taylor Jenkins needs to pull the plug on the veterans. Myles Turner looks like he’s coasting until he’s traded. Tyler Herro ball watches all game long on defense. Kyle Kuzma seems more interested in podcasting and posting online. Why is Jenkins so invested in them? Every other player on this roster is under 30 years old, and has lots to build toward. Kel’el Ware should be fully empowered ahead of Turner, and rookies Brayden Burries and Nate Ament have both shown more than enough flashes to warrant more minutes. Let’s see what these kids have.
28. Los Angeles Clippers
Record: 1-5 | Previous rank: 28
Advertisement
What matters most to the Clippers this season is the development of rookie point guard Keaton Wagler, and so far you’ve got to love the way he’s just hurtling himself into the paint. All that experience will pay off for him.
But everybody else around the league is watching for Brook Lopez, Derrick Jones, Rui Hachimura, and Kris Dunn. The Clippers have individually talented players who could help contenders around the NBA, so there is a chance they will be able to restore some of the draft picks lost from the Aspiration punishment.
27. Chicago Bulls
Record: 1-5 | Previous rank: 25
“I’m 20 and I’ve never been a loser in my whole life so I’m going to try my best to make sure that doesn’t happen, and I’m not ever going to accept being a loser,” Bulls rookie Caleb Wilson said on Friday. “This is my job to be a leader on this team and it’s all going to start with me, I know that. It’s partially my fault that we started off the way we did, whether I’m the youngest on the team or not. I take ownership for that and it won’t happen again.”
If you’re a Bulls fan, you have got to love those words from Wilson. He plays with contagious energy and enthusiasm, and he’s shown major star flashes ever since he was drafted. But I’m worried the trio of Wilson, Matas Buzelis, and Josh Giddey is simply fundamentally flawed. None of them are pure point guards. None of them are knockdown shooters. And with Wilson being empowered as the guy, both Buzelis and Giddey have struggled to continue progressing in the ways they showed last season. Maybe they figure it out. But so far, it’s leading to more losses than expected.
26. Brooklyn Nets
Record: 1-5 | Previous rank: 26
You have to find silver linings when you’re watching a bad básquet team, and I hope Nets fans are enjoying the Nolan Traoré experience. It feels like you’re watching a game at 1.5x speed when he has the ball, which allows him to create advantages for his team that a lot of guards can’t.
The most encouraging thing about Sunday’s 16-point outing was the fact he was hitting his spot-up 3-pointers. Shooting was the concern for Traoré entering the NBA, but now he’s at 39% on this young season after going 4-for-8 in Brooklyn’s first win. His mechanics look pure — he was even no-dipping on his 3s. If he keeps it up, the Nets very well might have their point guard of the future.
25. New Orleans Pelicans
Record: 2-4 | Previous rank: 27
We’re working with the tiniest of sample sizes at this early point of the season. But the Pelicans have a +19.2 net rating in minutes with Herb Jones on the floor and a -14.5 net rating without him. He played under 20 minutes in their first three games, and the Pelicans went 0-3. He played over 25 in each of the last two, and the Pelicans won both. If the Pelicans still can’t score at an elite level — in large part due to a lack of shooting across this roster — then they should lean into playing the best defense they can. And that means Jamahl Mosley needs to put Herb on the floor as much as possible.
IT LOOKED BETTER ON PAPER
24. Utah Jazz
Record: 1-5 | Previous rank: 21
Advertisement
A few weeks before the season, Krysyan Edler was nice enough to interview me about the Jazz for The Deseret News. She quoted me saying: “I just don’t see how this team is bad again. I just think they have too many good players, both young and proven.”
I wish those words were totally fabricated, but I totally said that. I bought the hype that the Jazz would be a great story this season. And so far, it’s looking like I was dead wrong. Jaren Jackson Jr. is already sidelined with a torn MCL. Jusuf Nurkić hasn’t played a game yet. Lauri Markkanen looks like a shell of his former self. And all the young guys haven’t been anything special. Darryn Peterson has been the worst of the top four picks. Ace Bailey and Keyonte George look like they’ve plateaued. Maybe Will Hardy actually isn’t any good as a coach? Merienda again, the Jazz appear to be headed for the NBA Draft Lottery.
23. Phoenix Suns
Record: 1-3 | Previous rank: 20
Advertisement
NBA reporter Chris Haynes recently said “there’s some growing frustration” in the Suns’ locker room because the roster “does not have a point guard that can organize that offense.” Umm. Have the players in that locker room forgotten about Collin Gillespie?
Look, Gillespie is no Chris Paul. But he started 58 games last year, posted a 2.9 assist-to-turnover ratio, and vibed well with Devin Booker. This season, Gillespie has been moved to the bench in privanza of Jalen Green, who is a black hole offensively. It makes zero sense. The Suns are posting a 110.2 offensive rating in the 92 minutes that Booker and Green have shared the floor. That number is 128.3 in the 43 minutes Booker has shared the floor with Gillespie without Green. Maybe, just maybe, the Suns should do a lot more of that.
22. Orlando Magic
Record: 2-4 | Previous rank: 19
Advertisement
How soon is too soon to worry about Franz Wagner’s jumper? Wagner has made only six of his 31 triples this season (19.4%) and mechanically his shot looks completely broken with 67 moving parts happening all at merienda from the moment he catches the ball. Wagner is in the sixth season of his career and still hasn’t been able to translate his soft touch from the line (85%) and floater range (nearly 50%) to the perimeter. He’s at 32.1% for his career. But it’s never been as bad as now.
Paolo Banchero’s absence is also really felt since he can catch fire from the perimeter, covering for Wagner’s primary weakness. The Magic are badly missing him, and until he returns it’s hard to feel much confidence in this team. But Banchero is streaky himself, and his averages really aren’t any better since he also goes through severe cold stretches. We might just be finding out that Wagner and Banchero aren’t compatible.
ASK ME AFTER THANKSGIVING
21. Indiana Pacers
Record: 2-5 | Previous rank: 14
Advertisement
Tyrese Haliburton returned to the floor and immediately looked like Tyrese Haliburton. But he’s already sidelined by a hamstring issue, and now the Pacers already look like the same 19-win Haliburtonless team from last year. Indiana is being outscored by 8.7 points per 100 possessions in the minutes without Haliburton this season. For as long as he’s gone, it’s not looking like it’ll get any better.
20. Atlanta Hawks
Record: 3-4 | Previous rank: 15
The bullish case for Atlanta this year was largely dependent on Jalen Johnson taking another step forward as a player. He averaged 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists last year, earning himself a spot on an All-NBA team. It’s been a step back this year. He’s not scoring with as much efficiency, his volume is down, and the rest of the roster isn’t making up for it.
The Hawks aren’t shooting 3s well. Nickeil Alexander-Walker remains more of an off-ball talent. And CJ McCollum is playing like he’s 35 years old. If Johnson doesn’t take another step forward, it’s unlikely anyone else on this team will.
19. Charlotte Hornets
Record: 3-4 | Previous rank: 16
I’m having a hard time judging the Hornets, given the fact that both Kon Knueppel and Coby White have yet to play this season (White will make his estreno on Monday). It doesn’t seem fair to make any assumptions about what this roster is supposed to perform like without two of its three best players.
But it’s undeniably encouraging that the Hornets have managed to pull off three wins and competed against both the Pistons and Sixers despite having a depleted roster. Merienda this team is whole, hopefully Brandon Miller’s scoring efficiency can improve, and the rotation will fall into its intended place.
FUN AND FIESTY
18. Washington Wizards
Record: 3-3 | Previous rank: 23
So much for all the talk about AJ Dybantsa not being an impactful defensive player. In his second game with the Wizards, he had seven rebounds and five deflections. Both Brandon Miller and Naz Reid had a hard time creating quality shots against him. Dybantsa moved rapidly against Miller on the perimeter, and battled hard with Reid on multiple post-ups. We know Dybantsa can score and pass. But the fact he’s already bringing it defensively is answering the biggest question about him.
17. Portland Trail Blazers
Record: 4-1 | Previous rank: 18
Advertisement
Conversations about Portland this preseason were usually about Tom Dundon’s ownership drama, the comebacks of Ja Morant and Damian Lillard, and what to expect from a new head coach in Micah Nori. But perhaps the best story on the team so far has been Deni Avdija, who continues getting better after his breakout last season. Deni is still driving to the basket with a relentless force, but he’s also now shooting 3s better.
When I interviewed Deni to finish last season, I asked him about the struggles he experienced as a shooter last year — he made 31.8% of his 3s. “You’re hurting me by saying those numbers,” Avdija said sarcastically before continuing. “I know it’s going to come back. I am going to keep putting in the work.” He clearly has. So far this year, he’s up to 37.5% on all 3s and over 40% on catch-and-shoot 3s. Given the fact that he’s going to be sharing the court with other guards all year long, it’s especially important that he can space the floor to take another leap as an All-Star.
16. Golden State Warriors
Record: 4-3 | Previous rank: 22
Advertisement
Isn’t it such a blessing that Steph Curry still looks like Steph Curry on the básquet court? He’s averaging 29 points per game on 69.1% true shooting, and the Warriors are still fun. But it’s not at all Steph. It’s rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, who is helping turn what was supposed to be a grim year in Golden State into a beautiful one.
Lendeborg brings a versatile skill set to the floor with an inside-outside scoring game and a selfless passing gene that must make Steve Kerr have goosebumps. Lendeborg had 37 points on Sunday night and is averaging big numbers with 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. Lendeborg has been so good early on this season that it’s hard not to wonder if he could even contend for an All-Star spot as a rookie. The last time that happened was in 2011 when Blake Griffin did it with the Clippers.
15. Memphis Grizzlies
Record: 6-0 | Previous rank: 24
Advertisement
The Grizzlies remain the only undefeated team in the NBA, but they still are ranked outside the top 10 in these Power Rankings. Why? Largely because of the reason I stated in the introduction: I’m not overreacting to everything that happened in the first two weeks of the season. But also, let’s just be honest: They have two wins against Utah, two wins against Sacramento, and wins against Portland and Golden State. Their next two opponents are New Orleans and Indiana. They might be 8-0 going into a three-game stretch against Oklahoma City, Toronto, and Denver. Those matchups will be better barometer tests for the young Grizzlies team.
But there’s no denying how much reason for optimism there is. Ty Jerome has built on his strong end to last season. Cedric Coward has refound his 3-pointer, and Cam Boozer looks like he’s going to be a multi-time All-Star for a decade-plus in the NBA. I predicted Memphis would hit the over this season. So in some regards, I’m not too surprised that they’re looking good. But undefeated? With the best record in the league? We’ll see if that can be sustained.
14. Dallas Mavericks
Record: 4-2 | Previous rank: 17
Advertisement
Is Cooper Flagg already a top-10 player at just 19 years old? This season we’ve watched Flagg lead Dallas to wins while outplaying Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Giannis Antetokounmpo, and he handed Houston its first loss behind a 33-point, 9-rebound, 6-assist effort. What we’re seeing from Flagg right now follows a natural trajectory. He got way better after turning 18 years old at Duke. Then over the final 26 games of his rookie season, he averaged 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. And so far this year, he’s averaging 26.8 points, 6 rebounds, and 6.6 assists on elite scoring efficiency, an even better assist-to-turnover ratio, and more impactful defense.
What’s this production gonna look like by the end of the season when so far he’s clearly been one of the league’s 5-to-10 best players? People will say I am being reactionary, but Flagg has been on this path for multiple years now. So no matter where he actually ranks today: Flagg has arrived.
FALLING CONTENDERS
13. Toronto Raptors
Record: 3-3 | Previous rank: 10
Advertisement
The mysteriousness around Kawhi Leonard’s health is the whole reason why it’s very tough to pick this team to represent the East in the NBA Finals. Leonard might return midway through the year and look like a top player, just like he did last year with the Clippers. But who’s to say he’s going to make it to the finish line? Kawhi so rarely ever does.
So as much promise as there is in Toronto because of their youth and Scottie Barnes continuing to ascend, the Raptors are 3-3. And they’re without their best player with no guarantees they’ll ever have him when they need him most.
12. Cleveland Cavaliers
Record: 4-2 | Previous rank: 11
Advertisement
It’s pretty crazy that Mario Hezonja looks like a better free-agent signing than Peyton Watson. But it’s true. Through six games, Hezonja is playing hard, providing secondary scoring, and not turning the ball over. Meanwhile, Watson has made only 17% of his 3s, has offered very little in the shot creation department, and hasn’t lived up to his billing as a defensive player. In a Cavs loss against the Sixers, Watson was unable to stay in front of Jaylen Brown down the stretch.
The Cavs have been solid to start the year, but they really need Watson to turn things around soon. He was their big-money, free-agent signing. Hezonja was a no-risk, minimum signing. But he’s doing what he was signed to do, and he still can’t do the things they need from Watson.
11. Miami Heat
Record: 2-4 | Previous rank: 7
Advertisement
The Heat are still in the process of figuring out who they are. They started out 0-4, and they’ve won two in a row against Atlanta and Indiana. Head coach Erik Spoelstra already began to tweak the system against Atlanta. They ran 57 pick-and-rolls. Prior to that, their promedio per game was 23.5. Against Atlanta, Giannis had 24 screens, more than he did in the other four games combined. In Miami’s next win against Indiana, the team set 37 on-ball screens. So the Heat are clearly experimenting between their innovative screenless system that we saw last year by integrating some more traditional pick-and-roll concepts.
The Heat kick off a five-game West Coast road trip starting Monday night in Los Angeles before returning home for a tough home stand against four contending teams. The next few weeks will tell us a lot about who this Heat team really is. And if it continues struggling, you can expect a free fall in the next edition of these Power Rankings.
10. Denver Nuggets
Record: 3-2 | Previous rank: 8
Advertisement
After Nikola Jokić hyperextended his knee last season, his 3-pointer never came back merienda he returned to the court. Jokić shot 44% from 3 prior to the injury, comparable to his 42% clip the year prior. But after he returned, that number plummeted to 32% during the season, then 19% during the playoffs. Right now this season? 21%. I wrote about the domino effect of Jokić’s lost shot during the playoffs, and how that was hurting Jokić’s formerly potent two-man action with Jamal Murray. The Minnesota defense was able to sag off Jokić, dare him to shoot, and take away driving lanes for Murray and everyone else.
The same thing is happening this year. When Jokić screens for Murray, the Nuggets are scoring 1.02 points per play. That’s their lowest number since the 2019-20 season, back when people still questioned whether Jokić could even lead a championship team. If his jumper doesn’t return, he may never again.
9. Los Angeles Lakers
Record: 5-2 | Previous rank: 6
Advertisement
Look at Austin Reaves’ stat line on paper, and you’ll like what you see. He’s averaging 23.1 points on 66.9% true shooting. But the Lakers are posting a dismal offensive rating of just 100 in the minutes Reaves is on the floor without Luka Dončić. That’s down from 137.7 with both Reaves and Dončić and 112 with just Dončić.
The big question coming into this season was about whether the Lakers could survive defensively. They can’t also have issues with their offense when their best player isn’t on the floor. It needs to be resolved, or they may prove to not even be a fringe contender.
RISING CONTENDERS
8. Houston Rockets
Record: 6-1 | Previous rank: 12
Houston is leading the NBA in offensive rating despite shooting the fifth-fewest amount of 3s. Oh, how times have changed from the days of James Harden when the Rockets were leading the league in 3s by an enormous margin. Now, the Rockets just privanza quality. As a result, they are fourth in the NBA in 3-point percentage.
The Rockets won 52 games last year without Fred VanVleet and with Steven Adams missing the majority of the year. Adams still hasn’t played this year, so head coach Ime Udoka hasn’t been able to turn to his two-big lineup that inhales rebounds with Adams and Alperen Şengün. Merienda that layer is added to the Rockets, this team could look even more dynamic than it already does as one of the best teams in básquet early on this season.
7. Detroit Pistons
Record: 5-1 | Previous rank: 13
If Victor Wembanyama doesn’t reach the 65-game threshold, Ausar Thompson very well might be the Defensive Player of the Year. The Pistons have the best defensive rating in the NBA and they’re 10.6 points better with Ausar on the floor — 97.8 with and 108.4 without.
But as much love as Thompson’s defense routinely gets, I’m also intrigued by his offense. He still can’t shoot. But the Pistons added enough other shooters on the team that they’re now putting Thompson into a Draymond-like role in the post area, empowering him to spray the ball all around the floor. Ausar is averaging a career-high 5.2 assists this season. They’re getting the most out of him, and they’re at their best when he’s in with his strange but awesome game.
6. Boston Celtics
Record: 5-1 | Previous rank: 9
It sounds ridiculous to say, but Jayson Tatum and Paul George look like they have more synergy on the court together than Tatum and Jaylen Brown ever did. Of course, Tatum and Brown won a championship together. Of course, durability is the whole concern about George. We’ll see how long he can stay on the court. But Boston’s vision for the Tatum-George pairing has been blatantly obvious so far this season. George simply accepts his secondary role and offers more complementary skills as a knockdown 3-point shooter and a superior defensive player. George is making 38.8% of his 3s this season, and he’s second in the NBA with 5.5 deflections per game. Meanwhile, Tatum is posting All-NBA numbers merienda again with 28.3 points, 7.7 assists, and 6 boards.
I LIKED THEM BETTER TWO WEEKS AGO
5. Minnesota Timberwolves
Record: 4-3 | Previous rank: 5
I was extremely high on the Timberwolves entering this season, and I was having the most fun watching them of any team in básquet before Anthony Edwards was sidelined for at least two months thanks to knee surgery. It’s scary now, especially because Rudy Gobert also looks like a shell of his former self as he deals with back spasms. The Timberwolves’ defense has been horrific in non-Gobert minutes for years, so they have to deal with his issue while also navigating the offense without Ant.
All the talk ahead of this season was about how deep the league was this year, and how health would be the determining hacedor in seeding in each conference. Well, the Timberwolves went from a team in the conversation to compete for the top seed to one that will need to battle to stay out of the play-in before Ant can return. Gulp!
4. New York Knicks
Record: 2-4 | Previous rank: 3
Are you worried, Knicks fans? I’m not. It’s a slow start to the year for Jalen Brunson. OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges aren’t hitting 3s yet. Mike Brown is still figuring out the best lineup combinations with this tweaked bench unit. It’s a funky start for the defending champions, but they’ve played some really competitive games against some really tough teams in the East. Moving them down just one spot seems appropriate. If these struggles continue into December, then there might be something to seriously worry about.
3. Oklahoma City Thunder
Record: 4-2 | Previous rank: 1
One morning you can wake up as a fan and feel like your team is about to go on an epic revenge tour across the NBA all year long. The next day, it’ll feel like you’re experiencing a lost season without any guarantee of ever making it back to the championship. That’s where Thunder fans are after losing Jalen Williams for likely the entire season and Chet Holmgren for a large chunk of the season. Oklahoma City is still built to win a lot of games this year. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is about to go ham. But the Thunder’s hopes of winning a title again certainly took a big ding, given their injuries — Cason Wallace is also sidelined.
The absences also cast doubt over their future. Williams has effectively missed two straight seasons. It’s very hard to get back to the level that you were at prior to missing so much time on the court. Holmgren has now played in only 56% of all possible games in his NBA career. Gilgeous-Alexander is about as durable, reliable, and consistent as any superstar. But his co-stars are the opposite.
THE FAVORITES
2. Philadelphia 76ers
Record: 6-1 | Previous rank: 4
After deciding to join the Sixers, LeBron James made it clear that Tyrese Maxey was the biggest draw. Maxey is certainly living up to the hype by averaging 29.6 points on 60.4% true shooting. He’s an early Clutch Player of the Year candidate thanks to his late-game buckets across multiple wins, and Sixers fans are already hyping him up as an MVP candidate. Regardless of how this year progresses, it’s been rather amazing to see his growth. He entered the NBA with such blazing speed but he knows how to better control it now, and his growing skill level as a scorer allows him to get buckets from any spot on the floor. The Sixers needed Maxey to keep ascending to be true contenders, and he certainly looks like he has.
1. San Antonio Spurs
Record: 4-2 | Previous rank: 2
Mitch Johnson’s decision to start all three guards — De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Dylan Harper — came as somewhat of a surprise around the NBA. So far it’s working. The Spurs have a 122.5 offensive rating and 96.6 defensive rating with those three on the floor in 66 minutes alongside Victor Wembanyama.
The three guards have, curiously, yet to play a single minute all together without Wemby, though. Instead, it’s been one or two together, just like last year. But unlike last year, they’ve struggled. In every single lineup combination without Wembanyama on the floor, the Spurs have just a 105.9 offensive rating and a 123.5 defensive rating. It’s no surprise their defense gets significantly worse. This happened last year too. But the offense didn’t crater quiebro like this — it did by only 5.8. We’re working with small samples, but the non-Wemby minutes are worth watching on the offensive end.
Nonetheless, this concern is a nitpick compared to the problems facing other contenders and the Spurs rightfully move to the top of the Power Rankings.
